Yolanda Angela Mercurio- Stramaglia

September 22, 1925 — November 20, 2010

Yolanda Angela (Mercurio) Stramaglia of Norwalk passed away peacefully and with dignity on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at St. Joseph's Manor of Trumbull, in the warm and comforting company of her loving family and friends. She was 85 years old. Born in Rome, New York on September 22, 1925, Yolanda was the daughter of the late Bruno and Anna (DeSantis) Mercurio. Yolanda was unquestionably a kind, generous, and beautiful woman. She was affectionately called "Nana," "Nans," and "Yo-Yo Ma" by many, since she always made the time and instinctively put forth the love and energy to be "Everyone's Mother." While she was revered as the quintessential mom, she was also known as a great dancer. She enjoyed ballroom dancing from an early age and continued to enjoy this passion throughout her life. She was also an incredible cook and a proud and fabulous homemaker. She loved the Yankees, especially her hero Derek Jeter. Most importantly, Yolanda's love had no familial bounds; she made a loving, lasting, and special impression on all who knew her. And she reveled in the times spent with family and friends, especially the moments with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was loved dearly by many and will undoubtedly be missed. She is survived by: two sons, Dr. John Stramaglia of Southport and Anthony J. Stramaglia Jr. and his wife, Elaine, of Mesa, Arizona; two daughters, Denise A. Byington and her husband, Gary, of Norwalk and Michele L. Gallucci of Trumbull; two sisters, Ann Malizia of Palm City, Florida and Delores Spado of Rome, New York; six grandchildren, Danielle, Brandon, Tiffany, Jason, Gia, and Nicole; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Many of her brothers and sisters preceded her in death. The Stramaglia family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, November 28, 2010, from 4:00PM - 7:00PM at Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory on 5 East Wall Street. Her funeral will be held on Monday, November 29, 2010. A funeral cortege will leave the parlor at 9:25AM and proceed to St. Matthew R.C. Church, 216 Scribner Avenue in Norwalk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM. Interment will be held privately, at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Whittingham Cancer Center in Norwalk, St Joseph's Manor of Trumbull, or Vitas Hospice. You may leave a condolence on this page, via the 'Guestbook'.
