Walter F. Fritz, 86, of Norwalk passed away on November 11, 2024 at Norwalk Hospital. He was born in Irvington, NJ to the late Edward and Katherine Fritz. Walter was predeceased by his brother Herbert and sister Gertrude.
Walter grew up in Stamford and loved Scouting and the outdoors. In 1955, he was selected to represent his Scout troop at the BSA World Jamboree at Niagara on the Lake, Ontario,Canada. Later, he was the first to earn the rank of Eagle Scout in Stamford Boy Scout Troop 14. He sang first tenor in his high school acapella choir and graduated from Stamford High in 1957. There, he met his soon to be bride Theresa Vassallo. Walter and Theresa were happily married for 65 years. Walter worked for the US Postal Service for 34 years, first as a letter carrier and later as a supervisor.
A Third-Degree Knight, Walter was a member of St. Augustine Council 41 of the Knights of Columbus for 52 years. He continued his Scouting career through adulthood, serving as the Scoutmaster of Troop 72, Wilton, and was a member of the Order of the Arrow, where he was recognized for exceptional contributions to Scouting with the Vigil honor in 1981.
Walter is survived by his wife, Theresa Fritz, three children, Joseph (Maralin), Mark (Beth) and Therese (Chris), nine grandchildren, Sam, Rachel, Eric, Brian, Emily, Ryan, Jack, Katherine and Maria, and five great grandchildren, Lucia, Zoe, Julian, Solomon and Madeline.
A loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, Walter showed love, patience and understanding when sharing his passion for the outdoors and life with his all the children, especially when it came to fishing with his sons and nephews. He also loved riding motorcycles and playing chess, as his father did before him.
As a devoted husband, Walter’s love for Theresa was ever present, as is hers for him.
The family requested memorial donations be made to any of these organizations.
