In Loving Memory Rev. Vernella Alford Brown 11/5/1926 - 8/27/2014 Rev. Vernella Alford Brown, age 88, of Norwalk passed away on Wednesday, August, 27, 2014 in her home surrounded by her family and several longtime friends. Vernella was the only child of the late Almina Armstrong and the late George Effs. Mrs. Brown worked as a Social Worker for the City of Norwalk, Department of City Welfare for more than 20 years. While working for the City, Mrs. Brown was also active with Carver, NEON (Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now) and the Norwalk Hospital Board of Directors. Before retiring Vernella was the first Hispanic female to be ordained as an Episcopal priest in Connecticut. Madre Vernella had congregations in many towns throughout Connecticut. As a bilingual Priest she served La Divina Providencia of Hartford, Church of the Ascension of New Haven, St. Martin's of Hartford, St Stephen's of Bloomfield and All Saints of Meriden. She is survived by her children, Jeanella Bentley (Charles), Almina Ball (Jorge), Enrique Perez Brown Sr. (Nayu) and grandchildren, Charles, Chanella, Jorge, Enrique, Adalin, China, Charoy, and Alicia and many relatives. Memorial services will be performed at Hoyt and Cognetta Funeral Home, 5 East Wall Street, Norwalk, CT 06851 on Sept. 3rd from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be performed at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1st Paul's Place, Norwalk, Ct 06851 on Sept. 4th at 11 a.m.
