Suzanne S. Salomon
Suzanne S Salomon passed away peacefully Thursday, March 6th 2025 at the age of 89, surrounded by family and friends.
A proud Queens girl, Susie was born in Forest Hills, NY on February 25th, 1936 to German immigrants Ernest and Wally Stern. Susie often recalled her earliest memory being the “clip-clop of the milk being delivered in the morning”, and remembered when the 1939 Worlds Fair came to town. She attended the Kew-Forest School, Rollins College and Finch College. A longtime resident of Fairfield County, Susie raised her three children Robin, Debbie and Jamie in New Canaan, CT and later settled in Bell Island in Norwalk.
An avid supporter of the arts, Susie was a docent at the Whitney Museum in Stamford, a curator at the New Canaan Library, and a patron of the Metropolitan Opera, Creative Connections, and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, among others. She was also a longtime donor to numerous organizations including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, PBS, and WSHU Publish Radio.
Susie’s innate curiosity sent her around the world, traveling to nearly every continent with friends, family, and on her own. Known for her not-so-great sense of direction, Susie often lost her way in foreign cities, which she saw as an opportunity to explore and meet new people. Always eager to learn, Susie continued her education well into her adulthood, taking classes in art, architecture, literature and creative writing, which led to a long-running writing group and lifelong friendships.
As an only child, Susie dreamt of having a big family, and that she did. Her three children, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren were the center of her life. At her beloved home ‘Whimsea’ on Bell Island, the family gathered for holidays, special occasions, and whenever they pleased - the door was always open. Many evenings were spent drinking Rosé or Cosmopolitans on the back patio overlooking Long Island Sound, laughing and exchanging stories around the kitchen table, and playing pool in the basement. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren remember finding treasures from the Good Fairy hidden in a secret compartment of the newel post on the stairs.
Susie was not only the matriarch of her family, but also of Bell Island. She could often be found taking long walks on her way to lunch at Rowayton Market or sitting by the beach, catching up with passers-by and saying hello their dogs.
Susie is preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Wally Stern, her son Jamie Salomon, her beloved dog Mazy, and Murphy and Morgan Cat. She is survived by her children Robin and Debbie Salomon, her daughters in-law Sarah and Susan Salomon, her eight grandchildren Tory, Tyler, Tim, Morgan, Alie, Ryan, Sophie and Ben, and five great-grandchildren Dylan, Madeline, Robbie, Wyatt and Brooklynn. The family wishes to thank Olivia Frimpong, Susie’s longtime friend and caregiver, the doctors and nurses of Yale New Haven Hospital, and the hospice team at VITAS Healthcare.
