NORWALK, CONN Stella Elizabeth Chappas Mason, 96, died March 30, 2010, at home in Norwalk, CT. Her final days were spent surrounded by family. She was born September 4, 1913, in Shenandoah, PA to Walter and Antonia Rocka Chappas. Her mother and father came to this country from Lithuania. They moved to the farm in Benld, Illinois when Stella was very young. Stella graduated with an associate's degree from St. Louis University School of Nursing in 1935. She married Monroe James Mason in 1939 where they lived in St. Louis and Glendale, Mo. She spent over 30 years working at St. Joseph's Hospital in Kirkwood, Mo. as a registered nurse in labor and delivery. She loved her job, her co-workers and adored all the newborn infants. She retired from her full time job at St. Joseph's Hospital at age 77. After retirement she was an active member of the Kirkwood YMCA Bodies by Ben exercise class. She devoted her life to her work and her children. In 2000, she moved to Connecticut to live with her daughter. Mrs. Mason is survived by her son, Lt. Col. (Ret) Michael James Mason of Suffolk, England; daughter, Kathleen Mason Raby of Norwalk, CT.; daughter-in-law, Andelphine Mason-Brown; 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Mary Chappas Cipriano. Her younger brother, Walter Chappas, died the following day, March 31, 2010. A private memorial service is planned. Interment is planned at Benld Cemetery, Benld, Illinois. Donations may be sent to: Mid-Fairfield Hospice, P.O.
