NORWALK, CONN Richard E. Hammond, Sr., a resident of Florida and Fairfield, Conn, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2010 in Bridgeport Hospital, following a short illness. He was 78. Born in Stratford on December 29, 1931, Richard was the son of the late Victor E. and Willa (Allen) Hammond and attended local schools. He served our nation in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and upon his return, moved to Norwalk. Years later, he met and married his beloved wife of thirty-one years, Clara Eloisa (Martinez) Hammond. Richard was a copper specialist and owned and operated the former B & R Roofing Co. of South Norwalk for over thirty years. He retired in 1988 and continued part time to work in his field. He enjoyed traveling and looked forward to his many day trips with his wife. He was also a loyal fan NASCAR. But most of all, he enjoyed the company of his loving family. He was liked by all those who met him. Along with his beloved wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard E. Jr., and his wife, Maureen A. Hammond of Old Town, Maine and Paul H. Hammond of Norwalk;; one brother, Paul E. and his wife, Marlene Hammond of Norwalk; three sisters, Violet Rafa of Norwalk, Marie and her husband, Bernie St. George of Huntington, Conn and Willa Uzaraski of Bridgeport; one grandson, Richard E. Hammond, III; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Preceding in death were three brothers, Bill, Victor and Albert. The Hammond family will receive friends on Friday, July 16, 2010 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 4:00PM - 8:00PM. Richard's funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2010 in the parlor at 10:00AM with the Rev. Nicholas Lang of St. Paul-On-The-Green Church to officiate. Interment with military honors follow in Norwalk Union Cemetery.
