NEWTOWN/NORWALK, CONN Pauline Giglio Mattera of Newtown, formerly of Norwalk, Connecticut, died on August 19, 2010 at Danbury Hospital at the age of 68. She was born Pauline Ann Giglio on June 27, 1942, daughter of the late Paul and Antoinette (Salvato) Giglio of Norwalk. She was predeceased by her sister, Nora Giglio Palmer of Norwalk, and her brother Philip S. Giglio and her nieces, Karen Giglio Rogers and Elizabeth Giglio, all of Danbury. She is also the sister of Anthony Giglio (wife Betty Fleming Giglio) of Naples, FL. Pauline is survived by her devoted husband and caretaker, John Mattera, whom she married in 1960 following her graduation from Norwalk High School; this October would have marked their 50th wedding anniversary. Together Pauline and John raised three children, their two sons, John Mattera, Jr. (wife Karen Sullivan Mattera) of Bethel and Michael Mattera (wife Kristen Anderson Mattera) of Newtown, and her niece Debbie Palmer Borges of Norwalk. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Beverly Finneran Giglio of Danbury; brother-in-law Louis Mattera (wife Mary Bruno Mattera) of Newtown; and sisters-in-law Anna Mattera (husband Pietro Mattera) and Clorinda Iacono (husband Raffaele Iacono) and brothers-in-law Larry Mattera (wife Betty Giuliano Mattera) and Sal Mattera (wife Rose Conte Mattera), all of Norwalk. She will be missed immensely by her eight grandchildren-- Johnny and Kaitlyn Mattera of Bethel; Matthew, Christopher, and Maggie Mattera of Newtown; and Joey, Alyssa, and Vincent Borges of Norwalk, many of whom are too young to appreciate how lucky they were to have a grandmother with such an enjoyable sense of humor and caring heart. Pauline was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews on both the Giglio and Mattera sides of the family. Born and raised in Norwalk, Pauline attended Norwalk schools. Pauline and John owned both Grandma's Restaurant and Grandma's Deli in Norwalk and together with their families enjoyed many happy memories there. Pauline was the bookkeeper for the family business, John B. Mattera - Mason Contractor, and more recently for Accurate Graphics in Norwalk, until her retirement. Pauline will be most remembered for the love she gave to her family - sometimes tough, but always unending and without measure. Always a talker, Pauline filled the lives of those she loved with stories, jokes, and happy childhood memories on Concord Street. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, aunt, sister, cousin, grandmother, and friend. Her smile, sense of humor, and appreciation of family will forever be etched into the heart of anyone she came to know. Pauline's family will receive relatives and friends TODAY, Friday, August 20, 2010 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory at 5 East Wall Street in Norwalk from 4:00-8:00PM. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 9:20AM from the parlor, when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Matthew R.C. Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM. The Rev. Tomi Thomas will officiate. She will be laid to rest beside her parents and her sister in St. John's Cemetery, Norwalk. Contributions can be made in her memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International. Hoyt-Cognetta is honored to assist the Mattera family with the arrangements. YOU MAY ORDER FLOWERS BY CALLING BRAACH'S AT 203.866.5963.
