Nicholas J. Calzone

April 8, 1921 — May 10, 2008

Nicholas J. Calzone, a lifelong resident of Norwalk, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2008 in Norwalk Hospital, while surrounded by his family. He was 87. Born in Norwalk on April 8, 1921, he was the son of the late Joseph and Rose (DeDonato) Calzone and attended local schools. Following his education, he served in the US Army's 88th "Blue Devil" Division, 349th Field Artillery Battalion, during WWII. After his return, he continued to serve our nation by entering the Reserves. On June 26, 1948, Nick married his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, Beatrice E. Eberhardt. He worked for the former Hat Corp for a short time and owned and operated Winfield Package Store, both of Norwalk. By trade, he was an excavator for various companies throughout Fairfield County, including the former Miceli Brothers of Norwalk, where he worked for fifteen years until his retirement. Additionally, he was a staff member at Raymond Funeral Home of Norwalk for many years. Nick was a private man who took pride in his garden and yard. He was also an avid Yankees Fan and enjoyed traveling to Newport, Rhode Island and Florida. However, what he enjoyed most was his supportive and loving family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed by all. A devout Catholic, he was a member of St. Matthew R.C. Church of Norwalk. Additionally, he was a member of the Pietro Micca Lodge No. 744 - Order Sons of Italy, the American Legion -Post 12, both of Norwalk, the DAV and the Teamsters Union Local 191 of Bridgeport. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Linda M. and her husband, James E. Gorman and Kim E. and her husband, Mark A. Mones, all of Norwalk; three grandchildren, Nikki L. Gorman and her husband, Daniel J. Roberts of Stratford, Conn, and Ryan A. and Brittany N. Mones, both of Norwalk; two great-granddaughters, Cadence E. and Cressida I. Roberts; a brother, Joseph E. Calzone of Stratford; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death (2005) was a brother, Frank G. Calzone. Nick's family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 in NORWALK'S Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, (203.847.7291) 5 East Wall Street, from 4:00PM to 8:00PM. His funeral will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 9:25AM from the funeral parlor, when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Matthew's R.C. Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM. Monsignor Walter C. Orlowski will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow in the family plot in St. John's Cemetery, Norwalk. Flowers may be sent, or contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
