Guayama, Puerto Rico/Norwalk Connecticut Minerva Bermudez, 62, of Guayama, Puerto Rico, long time resident of Norwalk, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 in Yale-New Haven Hospital after being stricken ill. She was the beloved wife of Jose A. Bermudez, Sr. and passed away on their 42nd wedding anniversary. Born on December 23, 1946 in Guayama, Puerto Rico, Minerva was the daughter of the late Augustin and Teresa (Iglesias) Guadalupe and was educated in local schools. She continued her education at Norwalk Community College where she obtained her degree in Early Childhood Education. At the age of 19, Minerva relocated to Brooklyn NY. In 1974, she and her husband settled in Norwalk to raise their two children. She worked for the Norwalk Public School System for over fourteen years and taught at the Nathaniel Ely School's Head Start Program. Her passion for helping children led her to open her own business, the former Ita's Center located in Norwalk. There, Minerva taught many children for over ten years. Minerva and her husband's lifelong dream were to return home to Guayama, Puerto Rico following her retirement and did so in 2005. Minerva was a devout Catholic and a spiritual lady. She will be remembered for her continuous singing, telling her grandchildren bedtime stories, as well as reminding them to always pray. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Minerva enjoyed traveling with her husband and reading many novels. Her infectious smile and ear for listening will be missed dearly. Along with her husband, she is survived by her son, Jose A. Bermudez, Jr. of Bridgeport; her daughter, Liza Yadira and her husband, Eric Montgomery of Norwalk; two brothers, Augustin and Victor Manuel, both of Puerto Rico; five sisters, Teresa Galarza, Noemi Colon, Lucy Guadalupe and Daisy Diaz, all of Puerto Rico and Nancy Silva of Florida; five grandchildren, Imani, Ariel, Erickah, Alan and Jose III; her daughter-in-law, Maria Amador of Bridgeport; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death was a brother, Eduardo Guadalupe. Minerva's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, June 19, 2009 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 7:00PM - 9:00PM. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 9:15AM from the parlor, when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Joseph R.C. Church, 85 South Main Street, South Norwalk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM. Additional funeral services and interment in Cementerio Municipal Nuevo will be held in Guayama, Puerto Rico. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Joseph R.C.
