Norwalk, Conn. Mary Elizabeth Wiley of Norwalk passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2009 in her home, following a long illness. She was 86. Born in Ishkooda, Alabama on February 12, 1923, Mary was the daughter of the late Elijah and Mable (Mitchell) Brazell. Mary "Dearie" Wiley was raised on the family farm and attended local schools. She relocated to Norwalk in the late 1960's where she settled to raise her family. Mary first worked for the former Trudy Toy Co. of Norwalk for ten years. She then worked at Norwalk Hospital in the Housekeeping division for thirty-three years, before retiring in 1987. Following retirement, she worked for the Norwalk Police Department as a Crossing Guard for nearly ten years. Reflected by her work ethic, Mary was an extremely active lady. Along with her jobs, she found the time to volunteer at local Elementary Schools, the First Congregational Church on the Green and the Guatemalan Marketplace. Mary was also a member of the Good News Bible Study Group of Norwalk and was a former member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Norwalk. Mary loved to surround herself amongst her family, especially her twenty grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren. She had a big heart and thought nothing of it to help those in need. Her spiritual nature, wonderful sense of humor and infectious smile will be missed by all. Besides her great-grand grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, she is survived by three sons, Oscar C. Wiley of Oakland, California, Artie S. Wiley of Ocala, Florida and James A. Wiley of Norwalk and her extended family at 1 Leonard Street. She also leaves behind her beloved granddaughter, Melania Smith, who became Mary's caregiver as her illness progressed. Preceded in death were three daughters, Frankie J. Smith, Martha J. Hunt and Mabel E. Wiley. Mary's family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 4:00PM - 8:00PM. Her funeral will be held at the conclusion of calling hours, 8:00PM with Lay -Minister/Judice-Of-Peace, Mr. Don Burr of Christ Episcopal Church, East Norwalk officiating.
