Mary Cammarata Horvath

Mary Cammarata Horvath, 94, died March 17, 2012, at The Connecticut Hospice, in Branford, Conn. She lived in Stamford, Conn. since 2011, coming from Tulsa, Okla. and Vero Beach, Florida. Born on the west side of Buffalo, N.Y. to Sicilian immigrants Filomena Scinta and Loreto Cammarata, she attended Holy Angels Elementary School and Grover Cleveland High School. Mary skipped school once to see a performance by singer Cab Callaway. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and was stationed in St. Louis, Mo., where she met her husband and settled to raise her family. Mary was a devoted wife, mother and lifetime volunteer. She was a Girl Scout leader, ran a soup kitchen, cooked for religious leaders, cleaned churches, knitted hats and scarves for the homeless and afghans for sick children at Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang camps and various hospices, and served food and scrubbed pots at the Salvation Army following hurricanes. Mary was a bingo assistant and led line dancing classes at The Club at Vero until the age of 90, when her health began to decline. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 38 years, Joseph Horvath; brothers Charles Cammarata of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ralph Cammarata of Buffalo; sisters Rose McMahon of Tonawanda, N.Y., Theresa George and Frances Southworth of Buffalo, and Sister Florence Ann Cammarata, G.N.S.H., of Yardley, Penn.; sons-in-law Oolep Indreko and James Jacobson; and grandson Ben Jacobson. Survivors include daughters Mary and husband Vincent Martin of Vero Beach, Susan and husband Deacon James Scarpitti of Tulsa, Okla., Leslie and husband Scott Collier of Springfield, Mo., Jean and husband Greg Westhoff of Stamford, Conn.; son Joseph and wife Carol of Bloomington, Minn.; stepdaughter Jacqueline Indreko and husband Ray Hegwer of Rancho Bernardo, Calif.; grandchildren Timothy, Matthew, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Joseph, Jeremy, Emilie, Aaron; step-grandchildren Shana, Vincent, Christopher, Brian, David, Brian, Anthony; great-grandchildren Ashley, Sabrina, Kevin, Cameron, Connor, Mason and Reese; step-great-grandchildren Andrew, Tiffany, Ayca, Alexa, Jordan, Ava, Theodore, Elliott; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
