Marilyn J. Rowe was born on December 11, 1948 in Nyack, New York and moved to Norwalk, Connecticut in 1973.
Marilyn graduated from Clarkstown High School 1966, and 1971 graduated Arnold College and went on to receive three Masters degrees. Marilyn taught Health and PysEd at Westhill High School and Biology at AIMS Program. As well as being part of the academic field, Marilyn also coached high school softball for four decades and led her teams to league championships and successful rankings in state tournaments. Marilyn coached at Westhill HS and Trinity Catholic HS. During her coaching years, she and her teams won 12 division titles, three FCIAC championships; were Class LL state runners-up three times and won the Class LL state title in 1992. Marilyn also coached 12 all-state players. Marilyn retired with a career record of 526-108 and was named Outstanding Softball Coach by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association in 1979. Marilyn also coached Norwalk Wave Women’s Fast Pitch Class A Softball team.In 2006, Marilyn was inducted in the Connecticut Scholastic and Collegiate Softball Hall of Fame and retired from public education.
Besides coaching softball, she also coached field hockey at Westhill HS in the 1970’s and was hired as head field hockey coach at Fairfield University in the 1980’s; returned to coaching field hockey at Westhill HS 2000-2005.
In 2005 Marilyn received her Connecticut State Massage Therapy license, established a private practice and became a teacher of Anatomy and Physiology, Kinesiology, and Pathology at Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy, Westport from 2006 to 2014.
Marilyn was an avid Pickleball player and golfer, and served on the Board of Directors and Committee Chairperson for Oak Hills Women’s Golf Association. While at Oakhills, she chaired many of the annual women’s golf events and won the Women’s Club Championship five times. Marilyn was also a Southern New England Women’s Golf Association representative.
Marilyn passed away June 4, 2016 after a long battle with renal cell carcinoma. She is survived by her spouse Barbara J. Grathwohl; her sister Joyce Sellers, and nephews Brian and Bruce, and their families.There will be a wake at Hoyt Cognetta Funeral Home, East Wall Street, Norwalk, Thursday, June 9th from 1:30PM to 4:30PM.
