Marianna Horwitz

July 7, 1928 — January 7, 2021

Marianna Calderone Horwitz, born on July 7, 1928 in Albion, Michigan to Victor (Vitale) and Elvira Cacciatore Calderone passed peacefully at home surrounded by love on January 7, 2021.

Marianna was the oldest of five siblings and part of an extended family of many aunts, uncles and cousins. She graduated from Albion Schools and attended Nazareth College in Kalamazoo, where the Nuns knew her as a friendly mischief maker.

Her cousin Joe introduced her to her beloved husband Henry Eric Horwitz, to whom she was married for 59 years until his passing on August 2, 2017. True to Marianna’s feisty, independent nature, the couple began a shared life of breaking conventions. They  followed the road less traveled by moving from Marianna’s small hometown to Seattle then Detroit and from there, the two made their way to Poughkeepsie, NY, where they resided for more than 45 years and raised their daughter Julie. Henry’s work as a professor and engineer gave them the opportunity to live in Chennai, India in the early 70s and later in that decade the family lived in Manila, Philippines. Marianna and Henry marched the globe together, exploring the world and visiting Henry’s family in Argentina.  In their later years, she and Henry moved to Wilton, Connecticut to live with their daughter Julie and grandson Evan (the apple of her eye).

Marianna returned to Albion every Christmas and summer. She loved the holidays, any excuse for a party, singing, dancing and being with her family and friends. She followed politics avidly, and as a first generation American, loved her country. Henry always said she would have made a great politician, with her ability to make friends wherever she went.  She had a strong musical gift, playing the piano and singing in the choir at college. She loved animals, especially dogs, and found comfort in later years when friends would bring their dogs to visit. Most of all, she was devoted to her husband, daughter, grandson, family, and friends, who will miss talking and laughing with her.

She is predeceased by; her husband, her brothers Anthony, Sebastian (Mike), and Salvatore (Sam) Calderone.  Surviving her are daughter Julianna Fritz, grandson Evan Fritz, sister Carmela Calderone and several nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to thank her devoted caregivers Sweetlana, Linda, Bonnie, Jamielle and Lisa.  Due to COVID, services will be postponed, with arrangements handled by Hoyt Cognetta / Raymond Funeral Home in Historic Norwalk.  Marianna’s final interment will be alongside Henry at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St John’s Catholic Church, Albion, Michigan or St Jude’s Children Hospital.
