NORWALK, CONN Maria Verde Mattera, a forty-seven year resident of Norwalk, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20, 2011 in Norwalk Hospital with her children at her side. She was 97. Born in Ischia, Italy on April 26, 1913, Maria was the daughter of the late Luigi and Theresa (Scotti) Verde. She enjoyed traveling to Ischia in the company of her family as well as gardening, sewing and especially going to the casino. She is survived by her six children, Clorinda Iacono, husband Raffaele; Giovanni B. Mattera, wife the late Pauline Giglio; Luigi Mattera, wife Mary Buono; Lorenzo Mattera, wife Betty Giuliano; Salvatore Mattera, wife Rose Conte; Anna Mattera, and husband Pietro. Maria was the grandmother of nineteen grandchildren, Joann Icono, husband John; Toni Hudak, husband Jack; Lou Iacono, wife Louise Bennett; John Mattera Jr., wife Karen Sullivan; Michael Mattera, wife Kristen Anderson; Debbie Borges; John Mattera, wife Sue Skroly; Tina Cundari, husband David; Gino Mattera, wife Paula Grecco; Marco Mattera, wife Katheen Kenneth; Larry Mattera, Jr., wife Patti Porricelli; David Mattera, wife Maria Zoccali; Diana Dilorio, husband Rinaldo; Donna Parrillo, husband Allan; Paul Mattera; Mary Kate Milliard, husband Pete; Jennifer Mills, husband James; Ugo Mattera, wife Kellie Shannon; Mercede Arnette, and husband Jerry. Additionally, she was the great-grandmother of forty-seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Preceding in death were brothers, Cesare and Salvatore and sisters, Mari Anna, Loreta, Annunziata and Giuseppina and several nieces and nephews. The Mattera family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 4:00PM - 8:00PM. Maria's funeral will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 9:15AM from the parlor, when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Matthew R.C. Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM. The Rev. Sunil Perreira will officiate. Entombment will follow in St. John Cemetery, Norwalk.
