Louis Alexander Melfi, Sr ., of Easton CT, son of the Late Jennie Rissolo and Nicholas Melfi of Norwalk, CT, passed away Tuesday night at home surrounded by his loved ones. Louie was 79 years of age and died from pancreatic cancer.
Louie was a graduate of Norwalk High School, class of ’59. Shortly after graduation, he joined the United States Air Force, served his tour of duty, and was honorably discharged in August, 1963. Having served as an electrician in the Air Force, Louie joined the IBEW L.U.208/488 until his retirement in 2003; he had been a union member for more than fifty years.
Louie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet Marie Spivey, his three children and four grandchildren. His children: Louis Alexander (Kim) Melfi, Jr., of Milford CT, Donna Marie (Jim) Rosenberger of Allentown, PA, and Elisa Marie (Simon) Cornish of Seattle, WA. His grandchildren: Jessica Marie and Louis Alexander Melfi, III, of Milford, CT, Michael Joseph Baskin of Bethlehem, PA, and Bradley Alexander Baskin of Allentown, PA, and his little buddy, Samuel Alexander, “Sammy.”
Louie is survived by his three siblings: Janice Pomazi of Redding, CT, Nicholas (Donna) Melfi of New Fairfield, CT, and Gary (Teresa) Melfi of Norwalk, CT. Louie is also survived by Janet’s six siblings, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Louie was a man of many interests. These interests ranged from Ham Radio Operator, photography, astronomy, music, playing the piano and guitar, gardening—especially, growing tomatoes and peppers. He enjoyed making wine, Italian sausage, raising Belgium rabbits and was a member of Back Yard Bee Keepers, raising honey bees.
Louie was involved in his community as a former member of the Norwalk Strawberry Hill A.C, The Sons of Italy, The VFW and The American Legion. Louie enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the Stamford Fish and Game, The Newtown Fish and Game and was a lifetime member of the South Norwalk Boat Club, where he kept his boat for many years. Louie was also a member of The Academy of Model Aeronautics and was often seen flying his model airplanes at Sherwood Island.
Louie was active and enjoyed adventure. He often went snow skiing in VT, and participated in exciting activities such as riding mules down into the Grand Canyon. Louie loved traveling and he was fortunate to have visited some interesting destinations in the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Italy, China, Sicily, England, Scotland, and Wales. He especially enjoyed visiting these beautiful United States in the couple’s motorhome. A lifetime member of the Good Sam’s Camping Club, Louis and Janet visited 45 states before deciding to spend their winters in Florida.
As diverse as Louie’s interested were, his favorite thing of all was spending time at his home in Easton, surrounded by those he loved most.
Louie will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.
