CAPE MAY, NJ / NORWALK, CONN Leslie deMille Lawrence of Cape May, NJ, former longtime resident of Norwalk passed away in his sleep on Thursday, April 29, 2010 in his son's home in Maine. He was 81. His beloved wife, Joyce (Schuessler) Lawrence of thirty-one years, passed away in 1987. Born in Bridgeport, Conn on July 17, 1928 Les was the son of the late Cyril L. and Thelma A. (deMille) Lawrence and graduated from the former Wright Tech of Stamford. Les resided in Norwalk until 1987, where he settled to Cape May, NJ. Les served in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the destroyer the USS Waldron. He worked for SNET for over thirty years, retiring in 1985 and was a lifelong member of its trade's association, the Pioneers. Les also owned and operated the former Cedar Creek Marina of Cape May, NJ for twenty years, until 2002. Les was a family man who enjoyed traveling to visit his children. In his younger years, he participated in his children's Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and was proud of all their accomplishments. Les was known for his many impressive inventions' and his meticulous ways. He was a graduate of the Rutgers University Master Gardener Program. He was also passionate about the NASA Space Program. He is survived by two sons, Steven D. and his wife, Betty S. Lawrence of Cape May Court House, NJ and Craig M. and his wife, Patricia A. Lawrence of Frenchville, ME; a daughter, Eileen L. and her husband, Brian P. Muller of Norwalk and seven grandchildren, Alayna, Kaitlyn, Andrew, Lauren, Kristen, Jonathan and Valerie. Preceding in death was a grandson, Matthew S.D. Lawrence who passed in 2005. Les' family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 04, 2010 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 6:00PM - 8:00PM. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 in the parlor at 10:00AM with Rev. Harvey Weitzel to officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk.
