Joseph Anthony Violante

April 21, 1916 — July 26, 2010

NORWALK, CONN Joseph Anthony Violante of Norwalk passed away on Monday, July 26, 2010 in St. Vincent's Medical Center at the age of 94. His beloved wife, Gloria (Wilfert) Violante of nearly twenty-three years passed away in March 2006. Born in New York City on April 21, 1916, Joseph was the son of the late Angelo and Philomena (Scheraldi) Violante and attended Brooklyn schools. He served our Nation during WWII in the US Army and was honorably discharged following three terms. During the nine year period of serving, he was taught the trade of Electrical Welding and utilized it throughout his civilian career. Joseph worked for the New York Central Railroad for many years. Following his retirement, he and his wife relocated to Norwalk, CT in 1994 to be closer to family. Joseph was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Philip R.C. Church of Norwalk, a member of the American Legion Post 12 of Norwalk, the Disabled American Veteran and the local and NYC VFW's. He was a kind man who was known for his infectious smile and storytelling. Joseph made friends wherever he traveled. He enjoyed watching boxing and wrestling and traveling to the Senior Center where he played Bingo. He also had a passion for the music of Frank Sinatra. Joe was a wonderful man and will be missed by all those lives he touched. Joe is survived by his stepdaughter and caregiver, Gloria T. and her husband, Steven I. Touger of Norwalk; a step-son, Arthur J. Fie of Lindenhurst, Long Island; two sons, Angelo and his wife, Stella Violante of Staten Island, NY and Joseph Violante; two daughters, Barbara and her husband, Joseph Compitiello and Phyllis Spinelli, all of Florida; a brother, Pasquale and his wife, Tessie Violante of Brooklyn, NY; a sister, Anna Violante of Brooklyn, NY; many grandchildren, including Ryan J. Touger and Arthur M. Fie; many great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were brothers, Frank, Angelo and Peter Violante and granddaughter Valarie L. Fie. Joe's family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, August 1, 2010 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 2:00PM - 5:00PM. His funeral will be held on Monday, August 2, 2010 at 10:15AM from the parlor, where the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Philip R.C. Church, 1 Father Conlon Place, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM with Rev. Michael A. Boccaccio to officiate. Interment will follow (at a time to be announced)at 1:45PM in the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown, CT. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, Conn 06492.
