WILTON, CONN Joseph R. Dugan of Wilton, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 in Norwalk Hospital, following a long battle with Congestive Heart Failure. He was 74. Born on March 4, 1934 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Joe was the son of the late Cornelius A. and Gertrude (McCarthy) Dugan and graduated from Coughlin High School in 1952. He continued his education at Kings College and subsequently obtained his MBA at New York University in accounting. He also served in the United States Marines Corps. Joe entered the field of accounting and worked for various companies, including Johnson and Johnson. It was there he met his beloved wife of forty-nine years, Marilyn Wilkes Dugan. Joe was the Corporate Controller for The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for ten years until his retirement in 1996. He also owned and operated the former Joseph R. Dugan and Associates of Wilton for twenty years. Joe had a zest for life and enjoyed traveling to his summer home in Florida. He also ventured to Mohegan Sun where he spent time with horse racing. But the most notable quality was his strong family values and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Along with his wife, he is survived by two sons, Mark C. and Timothy J. Dugan, both of Wilton; a daughter, Megan A. Atkins of Wilton; three grandchildren, Ashley A. Dugan, Margaux C. and Myles J. Atkins; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Joe's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February 13, 2009 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 5:00PM - 8:00PM. His funeral will be held from the parlor on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 9:15AM, where the funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima, 229 Danbury Road, Wilton, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM. The Rev. James C. Vattakunnel will officiate. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Wilton. Flowers may be sent, or contributions in Joe's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
