Joan Doris Shimko

Joan Doris Canfield Shimko, age 86, of Norwalk, passed into eternal rest on November 11, 2020 at Notre Dame Convalescent Home.

Joan is the beloved wife of Frank “Sonny” Shimko, to whom she was married to for 58 years.

Born in Norwalk, August 26,1934, Joan is the daughter to the late William Canfield and Nellie Kalnasky. She is a graduate of Norwalk High School and was a lifelong resident of Norwalk, CT.

Joan was an employee of The First National Supermarket in Norwalk and Westport, CT.  Many will remember her smiling face as a cashier for over 20 years. She later worked in scheduling for the Norwalk Hospital CT Scan Department, from where she retired, in 2003.

Joan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking.  As the family matriarch, Joan loved being with her family, especially on holidays. Her happiest times were when she was cooking for her family and her home was filled with her loved ones.

Mrs. Shimko is survived by her daughter, Kathleen J. Persons (Ted Persons), her granddaughter, Victoria Fitzsimmons (Robert), her great granddaughter, Brooke Fitzsimmons, her two sisters, Alice Tedesco and Diane Kalnasky and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister, Elaine Croce.

Services will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2020 from 4 to 6pm at Hoyt Cognetta Funeral Home, 5 E. Wall Street, Norwalk, CT 06851.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's name be made to Notre Dame Convalescent Home, 76 West Rocks Road, Norwalk, CT 06851.
