NORWALK, CONN Joan Lewis Kugel, wife of Dr. Robert L. Kugel of fifty-nine years, died Saturday, November 06, 2010 at Danbury Hospital, after succumbing to injuries she sustained in an automobile accident on October 22, 2010. Born in Port Chester, New York, Joan was the daughter of the late Gaitano and Evelyn (Hatcher) Taiano and stepdaughter of the late James T. Lewis. She attended Port Chester schools and graduated from Port Chester High School in 1947. She continued her education at the former Nurses Training School of White Plains Hospital, where she graduated in 1950. Joan worked as a Registered Nurse at United Hospital, later at the King Street Pediatric Group, in Port Chester and at the Mary Harkness Convalescent Home in Rye Brook, New York. After moving to Norwalk in 1960, she worked as an industrial nurse for Paper Novelties Company in Stamford, Connecticut, retiring upon the birth of a son. Joan was an active choir member of the Methodist Church in Port Chester. In Norwalk, she was active in the United Methodist Church, participating in the Keystone Club for many years, then in a Women's Club. She was a member of the Norwalk Community Chorus for many years and was an aid at Cranbury Elementary. She participated in the Meals on Wheels program when it operated out of the Norwalk Lutheran Church, was a member of the Norwalk/Wilton AARP and was an active volunteer at the Norwalk Senior Center. Along with her husband, Joan is survived by son Timothy and wife Tracey of Odenton, Maryland; son Christopher of Norwalk; as well as cousins Carol Weeks of Pompano Beach, Florida; Shirley Attridge of Harrisville, Pennsylvania and Marie Schmalkuche of Dingman's Ferry, Pennsylvania. Joan's funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 10:00AM in the Norwalk United Methodist Church, 718 West Avenue, with the Rev. Tisha M. Jermin officiating. Interment will be held privately. The Kugel family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 09, 2010 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 4:00PM - 7:00PM.
