NORWALK, CONN Joan D'Avino (né Juliette Marie D'Angelo) of Norwalk passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at Stamford Hospital, following a short illness. She was 90. Her beloved husband of sixty years, Raymond E. D'Avino, passed away in 2004. Born on December 15, 1919, in Queens, NY, Joan was the daughter of the late Thomas Michael and Vincenzina D'Angelo. She was a 1935 graduate of St. Joseph's Mountain High of St. Joseph's, New York. She was graduated from St. John's University with a B.S. in 1939 and earned her Master of Arts from Columbia University in 1940. She later was graduated from St. John's University Law School in 1943, where she was one of eight women in her graduating class. Following graduation from law school, Joan practiced as a trial lawyer at Mutual of New York until shortly before she gave birth to her son, Rick, in 1955. Following Rick's graduation from high school in 1973, Joan returned to practice law at the Legal Aid Society of Rockland County, where she eventually became the Executive Director, until she retired in 1985 and moved with her husband to North Potomac, Maryland, to be close to their family. A devout Catholic, Joan was a member of St. Philip R.C. Church, where she attended daily morning mass, was very active as an accomplished liturgical reader and supported youth and other groups. She also was a member of St. William R.C. Church of St. Simon's Island, Georgia, where she spent winters for many years. In addition to the church and church-related activities, she enjoyed worldwide travel, opera, entertaining, and spending winters in St. Simons Island, where she could be found bike riding, taking walks on the beach, playing bridge, and entertaining. Joan also frequently visited New York to see Broadway shows and shop. What was most important to her were her dear husband, her two grandsons, Paul and Mark, in whom she took so much pride, her daughter-in-law, Pamela Murphy, and her only son, Rick. She loved them all and was very devoted to them. Joan also is survived by beloved nieces and nephews and their families. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Joan's life will be held at 9:00 AM on Saturday, January 16, 2010, at St. Philip R.C. Church, 1 Fr. Conlon Place, Norwalk, Connecticut. Interment will be held privately. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Philip R.C. Church or to the Legal Aid Society of Rockland County, 2 Congers Road, New City, NY 10956.
