Janice Miller, cherished wife, mother, and grandmother, died at home on Wednesday, February 29th from complications related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A resident of Norwalk, Janice was born on December 2, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, and spent her childhood in Detroit and at a much beloved family farm near Sharon, Pennsylvania. Jan obtained her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her M.A. and PhD from the University of Iowa. She spent many happy years teaching at various universities, starting at the University of Iowa and continuing at the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Houston, from which she retired. After her retirement, she and her husband Robert relocated to the Washington, D.C. area, where they resided in Alexandria, VA for many years. After Robert's retirement from the World Bank, Janice and her husband moved to Norwalk, where she was actively involved in Lifetime Learners, Meals on Wheels, and the Darien Senior Center. Jan is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert Miller of Norwalk, her son Jonathan Miller of Long Beach, California, her son Jameson Miller of London, England, her daughter Meghan Alfen of Norwalk, and her 8 grandchildren Caroline, Lukas, and Juliane Alfen of Norwalk, Matthew, Michaela, Evan, and Zoe Miller of London, and Jamie Hight Miller of Lafayette, Colorado. Janice was predeceased by her son, Jeffrey, in 2008. The somewhat cold data above cannot possibly convey the love and esteem Jan attracted from her many friends and acquaintances around the country, and, especially, from her husband and family members. She and Bob always traveled together, managing finally to visit well over fifty countries both professionally and personally. She was, indeed, a very special lady, and she will be fondly remembered always. A simple memorial service will be held at Norwalk's Saint Paul's Episcopal Church on the Green on Monday, March 12, at 1:00 pm, followed immediately by an informal reception at the church. A private interment ceremony will be held later in the day. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations in her honor to St. Paul's Church, 60 East Avenue, Norwalk, Connecticut 06851, or to the American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19102. Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall St. is honored to assist the Miller family with the arrangements. To send a condolence to the family, visit www.norwalkfh.com
