James R. Whitfield, Jr.

April 23, 1938 — August 26, 2024

James R. Whitfield Jr., 86, of Norwalk passed away peacefully Monday, August 26, 2024. James was born in Port Chester, New York on April 23, 1938 to the late James and Frances Carter Whitfield.

Jimmy attended Port Chester, New York public schools and was inducted into the National Honor Society. He further extended his education by attending both UCONN and NYU.

James worked for Pitney Bowes, which he fondly referred to as “Pitney” for over 35 years. His final position was heading the Univac MIS shop, and his 1999 retirement celebration was a standing room only event!

He helped many Norwalk Community College students, financially and by tutoring. He guided many students in their quest to obtain their GED and many more master ESL and become United States citizens. James was quietly generous to many charitable organizations and churches.

James is survived by his brother George (Sue) of Washington DC, sister Marsha W. Gadsden (Curt) of Rockwall, TX; his three nephews Weldon Whitfield (Alicia), Bryan Gadsden (Jai)  and Vance Whitfield (Leslie); six great nieces and nephews; “like a son” Jose Saez, and family and a host of friends.

James, Jim, “Whit,” Jimmy will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Jim requested that there be no funeral service. The family will have a private graveside service at a later date.
