Jacob “Jack” Kleis, age 92, beloved husband for 70 years to Jean (Weed) Kleis of Norwalk, passed away July 14, 2017. He was born in Yonkers, NY to the late Jacob and Marie (Goebel) Kleis on March 28, 1925. Jack attended Norwalk High School and received an Associate’s Degree from the University of Bridgeport. After serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater as a deep sea diver and UDT combat swimmer during WWII, he was employed with the R.T. Vanderbuilt Company of East Norwalk for 42 years as a rubber chemist. He was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, serving on numerous committees and as a church Elder. Other activities over the years included participation in the Boys Scouts of America as a District Commissioner and membership in the Norwalk Quartet Club.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his son Kurt and daughter-in-law Mary of Danbury; his granddaughters Katy and Kristin; his sister in law Judith Chatfield and her daughters Kim, Chelle and Allison; and his nephew, Albert Darragh. He was predeceased by his sister, Catherine Darragh and nephew Richard Darragh. Jack will be profoundly missed by not only his immediate family, but by his broad circle of friends, who were considered by him to be his extended family.
The friends may call on Saturday July 22, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 208 Newtown Avenue, Norwalk. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11:00 AM. An interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk, with full military honors. The Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory has been entrusted with arrangements.
