Helen G Dominick

April 5, 1933 — May 16, 2024

Helen Gunther Dominick, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother passed away on May 16, 2024 in Fitchburg, MA at the age of 91.

Born and raised in Norwalk, CT, Helen graduated from Norwalk High School in 1951. She attended secretarial school in NYC and worked for the Bell Telephone Company before she met and married the love of her life Angelo Dominick Jr, a resident of Norwalk. Helen loved to tell the story of how she met Angie when he showed off for her during a basketball game at the PAL club. They settled in New Jersey where they raised their family of four children. Helen always wanted to be a wife and mother and was loving and devoted as both. After surviving the premature and unexpected loss of Angelo in 1979 to heart disease, Helen endured and finished raising her family single-handedly.

Known with extreme affection as The Hungarian Hurricane by her children and as Grammy by the grandchildren who adored her - a term of endearment that she treasured - Helen was eternally cheerful, loving, kind, funny, benevolent, tenacious, loyal, persistent, and stubborn. She came from a long generational line of green thumbs and was herself an avid gardener whose many favorite flowers included Bleeding Heart, Lilac, and Lily of the Valley. Like her mother, she was a passionate birder and would often disappear entirely from conversations and interactions to catch a glimpse of a bird through the nearest window. A maker of things, a baker of things, a crafter of things: her hands made many treasures that her children still possess and will pass on to their children. She was a fabulous home cook who always made sure hot meals were eaten together as a family around the table. She loved music, especially John Denver and Johnny Cash, and enjoyed travels to many places both domestic and abroad.

But above all, Helen loved being with her children and their families. Her love and support persisted throughout her long and robust life and right up until the end, it was important to her to know that we will be ok without her. She was completely surrounded by love at the end of her life and told us, “The love is all around.”

Her family wishes to thank the entire staff of The Highlands in Fitchburg, MA for their consistently compassionate and empathic care of Helen; the staff of Beacon Hospice for the care and support of Helen and loved ones during her final days; and Dianne Glidden, who offered Helen the gift of presence and friendship at a time when it mattered the most.

Helen was predeceased by her sister Ruth Gunther Vadas and her brother Harold Carter Gunther, Jr. She is survived by her four children: Jeffrey Carter Dominick, Mark Angelo Dominick, Ruth Dominick Castellano, and Tracy Dominick James; and their spouses; six grandchildren - Rebecca, Jeffrey, Angelique, Lucas, Jessica, and Alexandra; 8 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held at the Raymond Funeral Home, 5 E Wall St, Norwalk, CT on Tuesday, May 21 from 10am-12pm and will be followed by a graveside service at the nearby Mather Homestead Cemetery in Darien.
