Guillermo L. Arteaga

December 1, 1951 — June 13, 2011

NORWALK, CONN Guillermo L. Arteaga, aged 59, a 33 year resident of Norwalk, former Common Councilman, Justice of the Peace, and entrepreneur passed away Monday in Norwalk Hospital. Born December 1st, 1951 in Itagui, Colombia, Guillermo, or Bill as many knew him, emigrated to Norwalk in 1977. In Norwalk, he was an active member of the Republican Party (District C). He served from 1995 to 1997 and 1999 to 2001 on Norwalk's Common Council as well as Justice of the Peace from 1995. An enthusiastic member of the town Republican party, he also sat on the Human Relations Commission, Charter Revision Commission, Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now (NEON) Board of Directors, and the Affordable Housing Task Force created by the council and the Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce and most recently sat on Norwalk's Zoning Board of Appeals. Guillermo also sat on the Norwalk Senior Center's Board of Directors. Guillermo purchased and ran his own machine company, Advanced Machine & Tool Co., from 1988 until his passing. His undying thirst for knowledge accompanied him through his education at Norwalk State Technical College and Housatonic Community College and led him to seek out numerous continuing education courses throughout his life. A lifelong sports fan, he passed on his love for the New York Mets as well as his passion for soccer to his sons. A wonderful, loving husband who never stopped spoiling his wife, he was a kind hearted and tender father, uncle, brother, a welcoming and warm father-in-law, and a man committed to service in all aspects of the community. It was through his guidance and tutelage that numerous people found someone to listen to their problems, offer advice when needed, and always a warmth and welcome that will be missed. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Olga, his two sons, Juan Guillermo of Goshen, NY and Andres Felipe of Hamden; his daughters in law Monica and Lauren; his mother-in-law Maria Consuela Mira, who loved him as her own son; brothers Hernan of Medellin, Colombia, Jose of Bridgeport and sisters Rosa Alba of Florida, Luzelena and Mariela of Medellin, Colombia, and Marta of North Carolina. He is also survived by 17 loving nieces and 17 nephews. Guillermo is predeceased by his parents Jose Ignacio and Laura Rosa Arteaga and his brothers Gustavo and Jairo.
