THE LIFE OF DR. GERALD E. HEDLEY

Dr. Gerald E. Hedley, age 84 of Norwalk, Connecticut, died peacefully at his home on August 24, 2019. He was born on October 19, 1934 in Harlem, New York to the late Duncan Hedley & Mary Hedley. Dr. Hedley was educated in the New York City school system and attended City College. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. He graduated from the University of Heidelberg, West Germany in 1967 as a medical doctor. He received training in internal medicine at Norwalk Hospital, 1972-1974 where he went on to serve as a physician on the hospital staff until 1988, continuing in the private practice of internal medicine in Norwalk and later in Georgetown, Connecticut until the early 2000’s.
In addition to his private practice, Dr. Hedley served for 15 years as medical examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration and was also a staff physician for 20 years at Norwalk’s Department of Health & STD Clinic.
Due to declining health, Dr. Hedley retired from private practice in the early 2000’s. Thereafter, he formed his own consulting firm, Hedley Associates, dedicating his knowledge of nutrition and medicine as an approach to preventive health. He was a true believer that medicine included all aspects of human health; mental, physical and spiritual.
Anyone who knew Dr. Hedley (“Doc”) knew he was a kind, compassionate and gentle man of God. His smile was infectious, his laugh was a light where there was darkness and his love was unending. He was a doctor who truly cared for his fellow man. He followed the Hippocratic oath as a physician to its fullness; to treat the ill to the best of his ability, to keep his patients from harm and injustice, to preserve their privacy….. In other words, Dr Hedley treated every patient with respect and compassion regardless of social status, ethnic background, religion or gender. He was a faithful servant to the downtrodden and those often rejected by society, as proven by the many years he volunteered at the Macedonia AIDS Ministry. Dr. Hedley also served alongside his pastor, DeWitt Stevens, Jr., both at home and abroad, making two missionary trips; one to several West African countries and another to Kenya.
Besides his love for medicine and nutrition, Doc adored listening to his classical music and playing chess with whoever he could find to play a game. He also loved fellowship with his friends and family. Because of his love for flying he became a student pilot. All three of his sons went on to fulfill his dreams of flying by becoming pilots themselves for the U.S. Airforce and commercial airlines.
Dr. Hedley leaves to cherish his memories: his beloved wife, Constance of 33 years, his sons (the pride & joy of his life); Gerald (“Jay”) E. Hedley, Jr., of Arlington, VA, Dietrich E. Hedley (Kelly), of Bellville, IL & Terrence G. Hedley (Rachel), of Columbia, SC; a step-son, Jason J. Osimanti, of Norwalk, CT; a Godson, Timothy Stainrod, of Norwalk, CT; seven grandchildren; Hannah, Sarah, Jessica, David, Ella, Ava and Juliana; his sisters, Grace Braithwaite, of Queens, NY and Jeanne Tresvant, of Riverdale, NY; his brothers; Hartley Hedley (Cecelia), of Bronx, NY and Clement Hedley, of Bronx, NY. He was predeceased by brothers; Sterling Hedley (Betty), Archie Hedley & Neil Hedley and sister, Emelyn Hedley.
Above all that can be said of Dr. Hedley, is that he was a man of prayer. He will be missed but never forgotten and shall forever remain in our hearts.
