NORWALK, CONN George "Mimi" Lawrence of Norwalk, a longtime employee of the City of Norwalk, passed away on Monday, October 18, 2010 in Honey Hill Care Center, following an illness. He was 83. Born in Pennsylvania on December 24, 1926, Mimi was the son of the late John and Mary (Vadas) Lawrence. He attended Norwalk High School and joined United States Army, where he proudly served during WWII. Upon his return home, Mimi eventually met and married his late wife of thirty years, Helen (Trinkely) Lawrence. Together, they raised their three sons on South Main Street. Mimi worked for the Department of Public Works in Norwalk. He worked as a truck driver within the Sanitation Department and subsequently retired from the Parks Department, following forty years of dedicated service. He was a longtime member of the Norwalk Pastime, Laurel Athletic, Polish, and Eagles Clubs, all of Norwalk. Mimi, who was an avid sportsman of baseball, softball, bowling, golf and football, sponsored various teams in the area known as the Lawrence Tigers. He was passionate about being outdoors, and enjoyed gardening and taking walks on the beach of Norwalk. Mimi was a man with a big heart who will be sincerely missed by all. He is survived by three sons, Gary "Moose" Lawrence and his fiancé, Sharon Torre of Norwalk, Robert "Rocky" Lawrence and his fiancé, Toni Kruy of Norwalk and Tracy "Moony" and his wife, Kathleen Lawrence of Norwalk; a brother, Stephen Lawrence of Granby, Conn; five grandchildren, Nicole Lawrence of Norwalk, Alison Baber of MD, Christine Lawrence, Amy Lawrence and Kevin Lawrence, all of Norwalk; two great-grandchildren, Eliijah and Jaylynn and many nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were brothers, William, John, Jr. and Joseph Lawrence and sisters, Mary Brower and Rose Hyatt. The Lawrence family will receive relatives and friends in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street on Friday, October 22, 2010 from 1:00PM - 4:00PM and 6:00PM - 9:00PM. Mimi's funeral will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 9:00AM from the parlor, when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Ladislaus R.C. Church, 25 Cliff Street, Norwalk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM. The Rev. Michael J. Bachman will officiate. Military Honors will be rendered at the conclusion of the Mass. Interment will be held privately, at the convenience of the family.
