Florence Gargagliano

November 8, 1920 — February 20, 2017

Florence “Travia” Gargagliano passed away Monday February 20, 2017, she was 96 years old.  Florence was born Travia Macchiano and was raised in Brooklyn New York during the Great Depression, which places her among the ranks of The Greatest Generation.  By the age of 10 Florence had lost her father and 3 siblings and was raised with her beloved younger brother Rosario by her mother Pauline.  Pauline was a strong and caring influence throughout Florence’s life.  Florence married Leonard J. Gargagliano in 1943 and was a loving and devoted wife through 59 years of marriage. In their years together Florence and Leonard found time to travel the world going to many destinations including Italy, Hong Kong, France and Holland.  Florence was a devout Catholic and a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Stamford since its founding.  Florence was an employee at GTE where she made many friends.  Florence had a quick wit, a keen sense of humor and was known to “tell it like it is.”  Florence took great pride in her Italian heritage.  One of her most outstanding characteristics was that she was the quintessential Italian cook, for Florence, food was love.  Above all else, she would say that “her crowning glory” were her children – Joseph & Cheryl Gargagliano, Arnold MD, Angelo & Carol Gargagliano, Stamford CT, Mary Van Ness, Houston TX, Pauline & Michael Schlatter, Norwalk CT, her namesake Florence Gargagliano, Norwalk CT, Leonard Gargagliano and Betsy Hayes, Grapevine TX.   Florence also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren with more coming every year.   A memorial visitation will be held Monday February 27 th from 10:00am to 1:00pm at Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home 5 East Wall Street, Norwalk. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America - www.alzfdn.org
