Ellenor Madge Samuels
Ellenor Madge Samuels, 73, of Norwalk; formerly of The Bronx and St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, peacefully passed away at her home on December 2nd, 2017.
“Madge,” as she was affectionately known by most, was born in Mulgrave, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica on June 21, 1944.
A loving woman with a heart of gold, Madge spent the majority of her life in New York living in the Bronx, working as a cook at Riker’s Island Correctional Facility.
While on first meeting her, one might think she was quiet, but once you got to know her you’d quickly learn about her quirky sense of humor, including some quite inappropriate jokes at times!
Family was everything to Madge and she dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren, who she loved dearly and looked after in hundreds of ways, both large and small.
She was also a mother to many, many others, and showed endless generosity to all who encountered her. “Mommy,” or “Aunt Madge,” especially showed her bounty of love for family and friends in the kitchen, with an amazing ability to feed the neighborhood – quite literally at a moment’s notice. She loved feeding the multitudes, and was always quick to cook up some goat meat, a Jamaican classic and her absolute favorite.
Madge loved shopping, of all kinds, and for ALL kinds of things. With her being constantly tuned in to the shopping channel QVC, at any given moment a variety of (often unnecessary!) items would arrive in a constant stream of packages at her home.
She loved to party, and was always the center of entertaining any crowd that came to the house, a fairly constant occurrence. In more recent years, after a stroke which left her partially immobilized, Madge became an active member of the Norwalk Senior Center, where she enjoyed exercise classes and outings with her new friends from that community.
Madge will be dearly missed, and always gratefully remembered by her loved ones. She is survived by her sisters Jenny Hylton, Gritley Powell and Glamoria Samuels; her 7 children – Charmaine Massias, Saddiq Al Masudi , Dean Richards, Courtney Massias, Lorice Massias, Norman Massias and Wendy Massias; and her 14 grandchildren - Huan, Monique, Patrick, Nicholas, Joshua, Kay e la, Tyler, Savana, Aryel, Jayden, Taylor, Braden, Gavin, Hayden.
Visitation will be at Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home, 5 East Wall Street, Norwalk, CT on Wednesday December 13th, 2017 from 5pm – 9pm.
