Dora Coombs

January 18, 1920 — August 31, 2009

NORWALK, CONN. Dora Coombs, a lifelong resident of Norwalk, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2009 in Norwalk Hospital, following a short illness. She was 89. Her beloved husband, Harry J. Coombs, Sr. of fifty-three years passed away in 1992. Born in Norwalk on January 18, 1920, Dora was the daughter of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Hayward) Bibby and attended local schools. Following high school, she worked for the former Rivoli Corset Co. of Norwalk and also delivered newspapers during WWII. She went on to become a department manager at the former Factory Store of Norwalk in the 1970's. She subsequently entered the field of dog grooming and operated her own home-based business for nearly forty years. Dora loved her family dearly and also made close friendships to those she met. She enjoyed bowling, gardening and was an avid reader. Dora also loved spending time with her feathered and furry friends. She was a lifelong and active member of Christ Episcopal Church of East Norwalk. She is survived by a son, Harry J., Coombs Jr. and his wife, Amy Marcus of Norwalk; three daughters, Debra J. and her husband Frank A. Ross of Norwalk, Patricia M. Johnson of Southbury and Kathleen A. and her husband, Charles Roark of Winter Haven, FL; twelve grandchildren, Edward, Lori, Geri, Robert, Chris, James, Jeff, Shelley, Dennis, Michelle, Jennifer and Sandra; fourteen great-grandchildren, Chris, Lauralee, Melissa, Matthew, Lachanna, Danielle, Amanda, Kaysea, Jakob, Katelyn, Meaghan, Colby, Rebekah and Sara; one great-great-grandson, Jaivien; a sister, Rosemary Nevidjon of Durham, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Not to be forgotten is her faithful pets, Baxter, Walter and Tiger. Preceded in death were two sisters. Honoring Dora's wishes, all services will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Christ Episcopal Church, 2 Emerson Street, Norwalk, CT 06855. The family would like to thank the Norwalk Hospital's ICU staff for their compassionate care during Dora's visit.
