Donald R. Allen, age 92, of Westport and the beloved husband of the late Joan C. Allen, passed away December 15, 2018 at St. Vincent’s M.C. Mr. Allen was born in Norwalk on December 13, 1926 and was a son to the late Vincent and Elizabeth Allen.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Sara Greenawalt and her husband Mark of Fairfield; a sister-in-law Elizabeth Sedgwick of Weston; three cherished grandchildren, David Allen, Marc & Danielle Greenawalt; two nephews Thomas (Denise) and Scott (Donna) Sedgwick. In addition to his wife, Mr. Allen was predeceased by a brother Robert Clark and his son, Donald C. Allen of Westport.
Mr. Allen served our country as a radio operator in WW II from 1944-1946, as well as The Korean War from 1950-1952. Mr. Allen was a true English gentleman who cherished his family and friends, and had an immense love for nature. He took great pride in his career and was employed as a proof reader for Westin Woods, and then Scholastic for nearly 40 years. He continued to work, and commute to Danbury, right up until this past October. Mr. Allen was an active and social man. He enjoyed participating in a Senior Softball League at Compo Beach on Sunday mornings, and gathered with his “Beach Buddies” at Compo nearly every afternoon. He was a pleasure and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to The Carolton of Fairfield for their kind and thoughtful care throughout the past few months.
Friends may join the family on Wednesday, December 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm for a memorial celebration of Donald’s life at Hoyt-Cognetta / Lesko Funeral Home, 5 East Wall Street, In Historic Norwalk.
In honor of his casual nature, the family requests guest to wear casual attire to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to The Westport Nature Center or the Connecticut Audubon Society in Fairfield, CT.
