Carlton Henry Brown

July 26, 1930 — April 28, 2025

Carlton "Red" Henry Brown, aged 94, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, in Roanoke, Virginia. Born July 26, 1930, Carlton spent the majority of his life-90 years-in Norwalk, Connecticut, before relocating to Roanoke five years ago.

A proud graduate of Norwalk High School's Class of 1948, Red embarked on a lifelong career with Hatch & Bailey in 1948, dedicating 47 years to the company until his retirement in 1995.

Red served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from from 1947 to 1951 and then honorably with the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954, during the Korean War, demonstrating courage and dedication to his country.

Red's adventurous spirit was evident in his youth as he explored America on motorcycle. He cherished his BSA and Matchless motorcycles. Remarkably, he continued riding until the age of 89, when he begrudgingly acknowledged it might be time to hang up his helmet.

Equally at home on the water, Red spent countless hours navigating Long Island Sound aboard the Signe II, a Cape Dory Typhoon. His passion for sailing was a defining aspect of his life, bringing him immense joy and peace.

A master handyman, Red possessed an extraordinary ability to fix or build nearly anything. His neighbors affectionately referred to his self-constructed home on Coventry Place as the "barn house," notable for its distinctive red hue and unique shape. Whether repairing a neighbor's mower or constructing a piece of furniture, his tinkering was both a passion and a gift to those around him.

Red's warm smile and kind-hearted nature endeared him to all who knew him. He had a particular fondness for obscure and home-brewed beers, with Old Speckled Hen being a favorite. He was a lover of animals and has many feline companions throughout his life. His easy-going demeanor and willingness to lend a helping hand made him a cherished friend and neighbor.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Betsy Brown; his children, David (Ariane) Brown and Alison (Klint) Breene; and his grandchildren, Finley, Amelia, and Jameson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Signe Brown and Carlton Brown and his sister, Charlotte Cole.

Carlton's life was a testament to dedication, craftsmanship, and love for family and community. His legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and he will be greatly missed.
