NEW YORK, NEW YORK Yet-Hing "Benny" Gong of New York City, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009 in Norwalk Hospital, after being stricken ill. He was 72 years of age. Born in Canton China on December 8, 1936, Benny was the son of the late Sik-Foo "Harry" and Yuet-Di (Moy) Gong and was educated in local schools. He immigrated to the States in 1951 and settled in New York. He was a chef by trade and worked for various restaurants throughout New York City and after retirement, cooked for the area Senior Center. Benny enjoyed cooking, watching the Food Network and traveled. Above all, family was his first priority and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Chinese Conservative Baptist Church of New York City, where he was a Trustee and faithful servant of God. In his younger years, he was a Tai-Chi instructor. He is survived by two sons, Dewey and his wife, Nancy Gong of Norwalk and David Gong of San Francisco, CA; a sister, Wanda Louie of Jackson Heights, NY; two grandchildren, Christopher and Christina Gong of Norwalk; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Additionally, he leaves the mother of his children, Maggie Gong of San Francisco and extended family. Preceded in death were a daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Kevin McCarthy, who tragically passed away in 2003. Benny's family will receive friends on Monday, May 11, 2009 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 5:00PM - 9:00PM. His funeral service will be held at 7:15PM in the parlor with the Rev. Isaac Ngai officiating. Following cremation, interment will be held at Nassau Knolls Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
