HUDDLESTON, VA - WESTPORT, CONN Arthur Emerson Allen of Virginia, formerly of Westport, and Weston, Conn, passed away on Friday, March 26, 2010 after being stricken ill; despite heroic efforts from the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at Danbury Hospital. He was 77. Born on January 12, 1933 in Norwalk, Conn, Arthur was the son of the late Ralph and Viola (Bay) Allen, he was raised in Westport and graduated from Staples High School in 1951. Following high school, he honorably served our country as Airman 1st Class in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955. He served 2 years overseas as a Tail Gunner on the B-29 Superfortress 307th bomb wing 372nd Bomb Squadron during the Korean Conflict and later in the Air Force Reserves. Upon his return from the service, Arthur met and married his beloved wife of forty years, Marion A. (Mantie) Allen. Together, they raised three children in Weston. Arthur worked for Sikorsky (1956-1964) as a field checkout technician assigned to the presidential helicopters. He worked for Norden Systems as a supervisor (1965-1975) on electronic assemblies for prototype radar systems for flight aircraft, naval navigation, and space systems for NASA. In addition, he also worked for Perkin-Elmer Corporation (1983-1986) on the ASTRA Project; and his proudest contribution working on the Hubble Space Telescope project. He retired in 1992 from Norden systems after re-joining them in 1987. Arthur loved carpentry, fishing and boating. His family, friends, and church were most important to him. His passion was gardening and telling stories of his service to his country to anyone that would listen. Along with his beloved wife Marion, Arthur is survived by two sons, William E. and his wife, Dayna L. Allen of Newtown, Conn and Mark K. and his wife, Lisa M. Allen of Norwalk; a daughter, Kathi L. Allen of Redding, Conn; two brothers, Charles "Buddy" Allen of Haines City, FL and Martin Allen of Stamford, Conn; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Arthur's family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 6:00PM to 9:00PM. His funeral will be held on Saturday, April 03, 2010 in the parlor at 10:00AM with Rev. Robert D. Beinke of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Norwalk to officiate.
