October 27, 1940 — August 14, 2022

Anthony “Tony” Buono, 81, of Norwalk died on Sunday, August 14, 2022 in his home, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born on October 27, 1940, the son of Frank and Raffaela (Taliercio) Buono. A lifelong resident of Norwalk, Tony graduated from Norwalk High School in 1958. Married on May 11, 1963, to Bridget (Muldoon) Buono, they moved to their home on Fullin Road in 1964.

One of Tony’s proudest achievements in his lifetime was his career with the Norwalk Fire Department. Hired in 1962, he became  Lieutenant in 1986, in a career that spanned 38 years until his retirement in 2001. He was highly regarded by his fellow firefighters.

An avid golfer, Tony loved to spend time at Oak Hills Golf Course in Norwalk. He was a devoted member of The Church of the Assumption in Westport, volunteering for many years as an usher.

Tony was dedicated to his many many friends who he treated like family. In his retirement, his time spent enjoying coffee with “the guys” brought him immeasurable joy.

Tony also had a love for the country of Ireland, where his wife was born and raised. Together with their daughters, they spent many of their summers with beloved family and friends in Castlebar, County Mayo.

Tony is survived by his wife Bridget, his daughter MaryAnn Madaffari and her husband Todd, his brother-in-law Angelo Mattera, and his son-in-law Michael McCallum. In addition, he is survived by his three grandchildren whom he loved dearly and were an incredible source of pride, Bridget McCallum, Gavin McCallum, and Henry Madaffari. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Linda McCallum, his sisters Frances Buono, and Angie Buono Mattera, and his nephew Patrick Mattera.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at The Church of the Assumption in Westport on Friday, August 19th at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment at St. John’s Cemetery in Norwalk. Calling hours are on Thursday August 18th at Raymond Funeral Home in Norwalk from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
